AI in the Clinic

‘AI in the Clinic’ is a new Wellcome Trust funded project, awarded in the recent themed call for Seed Projects exploring AI and Healthcare in the Social Sciences and Humanities. The project is led by Dr Annamaria Carusi (Principal Investigator), who is joined in the research team by Prof Ian Sabroe and Peter Winter.

The focus of the project is on multiple, intersecting AI applications in real world clinical contexts. In these contexts, AI applications are not single, discrete entities, but are interconnected with other AI applications, and with existing practices and technologies, that all affect patients’ diagnoses and treatments.This project studies the interactions among multiple AI applications in the complex socio-technical environment of a leading national Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) unit, where AI is being researched for implementation into diagnostic imaging, biomarker identification, and clinical presentation.

The project team will conduct three main activities:

  1. Study the development process of AI applications, with a view to their implementation alongside multiple AI applications in real clinical contexts.
  2. Conduct a pilot study of putting into practice the principles of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) in AI.
  3. Participate in and organise network activities to build a robust research community on ubiquitous AI in complex clinical contexts.

The project is a collaboration between University of Sheffield Medical Humanities, iHuman, Insigneo, and the STH/Royal Hallamshire Hospital’s Pulmonary Cardiovascular Diseases Unit.
