Shame on you Stigma! Researching Stigmatised Health Conditions

October 13 @ 3:30 pm - 6:00 pm

Concepts of shame and stigma have shaped our responses to disease throughout history and across many cultures, whether the diseases themselves are associated with stigma or the consequences of disease-related behaviours
cause shame.

You are invited to attend a symposium looking at research conducted by the Shame and Stigma Network of Medical Humanities Sheffield, with a potential to develop future collaborations. The event will focus on shame and stigma
associated with skin conditons, seizure disorders (epilepsy and non-epileptic attackdisorder), and alcohol-related problems. Invited speakers will discuss the individual experience, historical and clinical implications on medicine.

Invited speakers will include:
• Ogo Maduewesi (Vitiligo Support and Awareness Foundation – Nigeria)
• Steven Earnshaw (Department of English, Sheffield Hallam University)
• Cordelia Gray (Specialist Psychotherapist, Royal Hallamshire Hospital
