More about Dyfrig

Dyfrig is a Consultant and Clinical Director of Emergency Medicine in Barnsley. Raised in rural Mid-Wales, he is a Sheffield medical graduate (1989) with postgraduate training in medicine, anaesthesia and Emergency Medicine, in Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

He combines a passion for critical thinking and decision-making with an interest in teaching undergraduate medical students. It is in this capacity he is a Senior Fellow in Medical Education, an honorary and entirely made-up title. He believes it is not only possible, but it is essential that doctors learn to understand how they make decisions – by doing so the safety of patients will be enhanced.

He says he enjoys teaching undergraduates because, unlike the senior trainees, he still has a chance of knowing more than them. The real reason, however, is that teaching young minds before they have developed too many bad habits in their thinking has great potential for stimulating productive lifelong learning.

His vision for the teaching of critical thinking is that it becomes embedded in the medical curriculum and perhaps in other undergraduate courses too.

Family, church, skiing and being a coffee aficionado are all important to him when the working day comes to an end.
