This research aims to cast a wide net over the seventeenth century and explore the criminal aspects connected to the production, trade, and consumption of tobacco. Specific illegal behaviour included domestic cultivation, the importation of untaxed tobacco, unlicensed retailing, adulteration, and excessive consumption. Alex is particularly interested in how these practices changed over the course of the century and their effects on specific communities.
