Andrew is Reader in Clinical Psychology working in the Department of Psychology on the NHS Clinical Psychology Doctoral Training Programme. He is registered as both a Clinical and Health Psychologist and practices in the NHS in South Yorkshire, where he provides a Clinical Health Psychology Service for people adjusting to long-term health conditions (primarily working with people following treatment for cancer, people living with diabetes, and people living with skin conditions).
Within the University his administrative role is Director of Research Training on the DClin Psych programme and he also teaches on the undergraduate psychology programme and on various MSc courses. He sits on the Health & Human Interventional Studies Research Governance Sub-Committee in Research and Innovation Services and is a member of Senate.
His research interests focus on exploring psychological reactions to disfiguring conditions with a view to developing psychosocial interventions at both an individual level and social level. He has a particular interest in psychodermatology. He is the author of approximately 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters in this and related areas. He is co-author on a forthcoming clinical manual that provides a guidance on the use of psychosocial interventions aimed at supporting individuals distressed about their appearance as a result of disfigurement (Wiley, forthcoming). He is an advisory to The Katie Piper Foundation, a leading charity for people living with the aftereffects of burns, and he has collaborated with other charities such as Changing Faces and The Vitiligo Society.
He has an additional methodological research interest in the use of qualitative methods in the wider mental health arena and the involvement of service users in such research. He is collaborating with Sheffield Health and Social Care Trust in several projects in this area including SHSCT’s partnership project with Gulu mental health services in Uganda. He is co-editor of a text book on qualitative methods aimed at practitioners.
