Before focussing his research interest on the psychosocial and neuropsychological aspects of epilepsy and the nature and treatment of nonepileptic attack disorder (NEAD), Markus completed an MD in Medical History. He is also very interested in doctor-patient communication and has pioneered the use of Conversation Analysis and other sociolinguistic research methods in neurological settings.
In his clinical work as an Honorary Consultant Neurologist Markus is involved in all aspects of medical care for patients with seizures. He has helped to build up psychotherapy programmes for patients with NEAD and patients with epilepsy, but is also involved in the evaluation of patients for epilepsy surgery.
Markus is a Council Member of the UK branch of the International League Against Epilepsy and a Director of the British Neuropsychiatric Association. He works with three charities supporting patients with seizures: He chairs the Medical Advisory Boards of Epilepsy Action and the Nonepileptic Attack Disorder Trust.
Markus is also a member of the Medical Advisory Board of STARS, a charity for people with recurrent syncope. He has created an information website for patients with NEAD.
He is the Editor-in-Chief of Seizure European Journal of Epilepsy and on the editorial boards of Epilepsy & Behavior and Epilepsy & Behavior Case Reports. He currently chairs the nonepileptic seizure Special Interest Group of the American Epilepsy Society.
